A client with a consumer electronic telecommunication application recently approached Tech Inc. The parts needed to be manufactured in the most economic method possible, due to the competitiveness of the industry. The parts were to be molded using Vectra A-130®, a liquid crystal polymer, in order to meet the high temperatures of an intermediate manufacturing process.

As part of Tech’s commitment to service the client, Tech has set up a cell to support the client’s program. The cell consists of an 83 Ton Arburg® injection molding machine, a Wittmann CNC high speed servo driven robot, four cavity injection mold with Husky hot sprue and controller, closed loop material drying and conveyance system, along with a closed loop glycol-based mold heater. The cell provides optimums in cycle time, and bulk and finished goods handling. The closed looped and CNC controlled systems also provide the reliability needed to run the job at a CpK level in excess of +/- 3 sigma.

Tech’s client has gained many benefits as a result of working with Tech on this program. Over 10,000,000 parts have been shipped in the last year without one return. Tech has shipped product 100% on time, at significant savings to the client.

The program is a multi-tool program. The first mold has made more than 7,500,000 parts in less than a year. The tool has not lost any time due to mold damage or wear. The mold was made to SPI/SPE class 101 specifications. These specifications call for hard steel (S-7) cavities and cores, parting line locks, as well as guided pin and blade ejection.

It is quite a feat that the mold has not seen any damage or wear when the number (128) and the size of the ejection blades (0.032") is taken into consideration.

The Husky® hot sprue has also helped to decrease cycle times and decrease material costs, without any difficulties.

The robot purchased by Tech, from Wittmann Robot® and Automation Systems®, is a state of the art, high-speed servo driven robot. The robot comes with custom downstream part stacking conveyers that align the parts to the desired orientation. The robot has decreased the amount of labor used to run the job, thus ensuring the client of lower prices, with increased quality levels. The robot purchase is just one example of the many ways that Tech is willing to work with a client to guarantee that our clients receive the highest quality parts in the most economical manner.
